Background of the Study
The increasing importance of open access journals in academia has created a paradigm shift in how postgraduate students access and utilize scholarly literature. Open access platforms have been crucial in democratizing knowledge, removing traditional subscription barriers, and enhancing global academic collaborations (Smith, 2023). At Modibbo Adama University, the shift toward open access usage reflects broader trends in higher education, where students actively seek immediate access to resources that can support their research and learning endeavors. The dynamic nature of digital publishing and the proliferation of online repositories have further contributed to an environment where scholarly work is more accessible than ever before (Olawale, 2024). Postgraduate students’ usage patterns, including the frequency of access, reliance on free resources, and the challenges encountered such as information overload or credibility concerns, provide valuable insight into the educational impact of open access initiatives. Moreover, advancements in information technology have prompted educational institutions to reassess their resource management, urging an evaluation of how these platforms sustain academic excellence and research quality (Ikpe, 2023). This study situates itself at the intersection of technology, education, and policy, identifying key patterns while exploring the influence of open access on postgraduate scholarship, and how such patterns can be leveraged to improve academic outcomes and resource planning (Adebola, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the acknowledged benefits of open access journals in expanding research horizons, postgraduate students at Modibbo Adama University appear to face challenges in fully harnessing these digital resources. Many students report difficulties navigating the plethora of available journals, discerning quality content, and managing the information influx efficiently (Nwankwo, 2024). There is also evidence of uneven usage patterns, where reliance on open access remains sporadic, leading to potential gaps in academic research and learning outcomes. Furthermore, institutional support in terms of training and infrastructure appears to be lagging compared to the rapid digital transformation in publishing. These issues suggest a disconnection between policy intentions and actual usage patterns, emphasizing the need for a systematic examination to improve resource accessibility, boost research quality, and inform policymaker decisions (Chukwu, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
